Maplewood Stables is primarily a Boarding and Lesson Facility nestled in the rolling hills of Northumberland County, just minutes outside the town of Cobourg, Ontario. It is owned and run by Jen Burnham who grew up on the family dairy and cash crop farm before she converted it to horses.

The love of horses was very obvious in Jen through early childhood and evolved as Jen followed her dreams all through public and high school taking riding lessons and eventually getting her own real live pony. The business structure was conceived of and put in place in March of 2002 shortly after graduating from Kemptville College with a Equine Management Diploma. The business was quick to grow and fun to keep up with as a fresh graduate realizing her dreams were coming true. It is no longer 3 small stalls in the old Dairy barn, but two large indoor arenas with 30 stalls in total and 45 horses on the property.

The Facilities;

The business currently has two large 100’x200′ outdoor sand rings with stadium jumps, and two indoor arenas. A 60’x120′ indoor arena for lessons which was built in 2005, and a 80’x160′ arena strictly for the boarders built in 2010. There are viewing areas for both arenas, a wash stall, heated tack room with sink and microwave, lots of parking and areas to sit and enjoy the fresh country air. There are some cross country jumps on the edges of farmers fields and short trails as well although we don’t offer trail riding for the public. There is a breathtaking view of lake Ontario and the west side of Cobourg from the large hill on the property.

In the boarders barn there are 24 stalls, each one 10’x12′ cleaned and bedded with fresh cedar shavings daily. Each horse has a personalized feeding program and extra supplements and minerals are added if the owner desires. The hay is local and fed according to weight requirements. We have the all you can eat buffet fields and the diet fields for those who have health concerns. The fields themselves give the horses lots of room to run, even the smaller fields for dieted horses are large enough for a good romp if they want to. There are shelters in all the fields for wind breaks or to get out of the hot sun. There are automatic waterers in each field and the horses are kept outside as much as possible as we feel this is the most natural way for horses to live.   All breeds of horses and disciplines are welcome.

On The Go;

We normally host 6 Hunter/Jumper schooling shows throughout the summer from May-October, rain or shine thanks to the two arenas. Class lists, judges and results can be found on the show page.

We also run Summer camps for the month of July ages 8-14, Achievement programs for our lesson students for those who want to learn a bit more than just riding.

The facility is available to rent for clinics if anyone has a desire to put one together.

Lessons are offered year round by our in barn coaches and the handling and care of your horses is taken care of by qualified staff and Jen B herself. Jen has over 25 years of caring for horses under her belt, and lives on property which should put your heart at ease. We strive to make and keep your horse happy and healthy during their stay here at Maplewood Stables.
